Simplify Whole Number Ratios (Word Problems) Worksheet

8 problems

Ratio can be defined as the comparison of two values. For example, a:b where a is the first term and b is denoted as the second term. On the other hand, whole numbers are the positive integers on the number line starting from 0. Simplifying a ratio of whole numbers can be easily done using some steps. Those steps are mentioned below.

Teaching Simplifying Whole Number Ratios Easily

  • Firstly, find the factors of both the numbers in ratio.

  • Then, identify the HCF i.e Highest Common Factor.

  • Now, divide each of the terms present in the ratio by the HCF.

  • Lastly, write the ratio in the simplest form.

Here is an example to solve a problem of simplifying whole number ratios. Let’s look at the given example mentioned below to understand more about simplifying the ratio of whole numbers.

Q: Write the ratio 25:75 in the Simplest Form?

Step 1: Find the Factors of both the whole numbers.

So, Factors of 25 = 1,5 and 25.

And, Factors of 75 = 1, 3, 5, 15, 25 and 75.

Step 2: Identify the HCF.

Here, the GCF of 25 and 75 is 25.

Step 3: Divide each of the terms by the GCF.

So, 25 / 25 = 1

And, 75 / 25 = 3

So, the simplest form of 25:75 is 1:3.
