Explain to students that they will find the greatest common factor today using two different methods. The two methods are listing factors and the ladder method.&nbsp;Use the list they have already generated to find all the common factors of `18` and `24` and then identify the greatest of these factors.&nbsp;Share the process with students for their reference. Work together to find the `\text{GCF}` of `40` and `24`. Explain to them that often mathematicians use `\text{GCF}``(40, 24)` as a way to denote `\text{GCF}`.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_3156b75dc6.png"></figure><h3>Ladder method</h3>Tell students that a fun way to find the greatest common factor is by using the ladder method. Walk through the next example with students to find the `\text{GCF}` of `40` and `24` again, using the ladder method.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_d97e05afaa.png"></figure>Start by having students put the two numbers inside the ladder. Next, we need to identify any common factor between the two numbers. You can remind students of the divisibility rules, such as any even number is divisible by `2`. You’ll write the common factor outside the ladder, then divide `40` and `24` by that common factor, `2`.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_dbc3a770bb.png"></figure>You’ll continuously repeat to process and finding and dividing by a common factor until the last ring of the ladder contains two numbers that have `1` as a common factor.&nbsp;Ask students how would you use the common factors outside to find the `\text{GCF}`. Since they already know that the `\text{GCF}` is `8`, they are likely to say that we need to multiply all the common factors. When they work on finding the `\text{GCF}` using the ladder method, you need to watch out for them by adding the factors instead of multiplying them.Ask students if it would make a difference if they had started with a `4` instead of `2`. Try it out with students. They will love it that the answer stays the same.&nbsp;<h3>More practice as a class</h3>There is one more example that you can work through as a class. Since the ladder method is likely more new and unfamiliar for students, you should use that method to find the `\text{GCF}`.&nbsp;When you give larger numbers, students will see the usefulness of using the ladder method. It also allows them to move as fast or as slowly as they are comfortable with. For example, to find the `\text{GCF}` of `54` and `90`, they could factor out `2, 3, 3` or `9, 2` or `6, 3`.<h3>Partner activity</h3>For some additional practice, allow students to work in partners on the&nbsp;<a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xGfiwjeXMnHrxiPf1Ky_4ENaUvzh4duv2LbBJOvK_d0/edit">Finding GCF activity</a>. Students are given `10` problems across three difficulty level and asked to work on any `5` problems.&nbsp;It is good practice for students to see as they’re working with a partner that they might choose different common factors for their ladder, or they might choose the same factors, but in a different order. Students need to see that they will still get the same answer!

<h3>Warm up</h3>Start the lesson with a warm-up activity where students practice listing all the factors of different numbers. Remind students that factors are numbers that can be divided into the number, without leaving a remainder. Display slide `1` for students.

Tell them what they figured out is that “to divide by a number, we have to change division to multiplication and flip that number”. When you flip the number, it has a fancy name called “reciprocal”. It is used in many places but definitely in division! So, we will learn more about reciprocals and practice finding reciprocals.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_e97be68d43.png"></figure>Review the definition with students. You can remind students that reciprocals are multiplicative inverses. Through this example, you may want to show students that finding the reciprocal of a fraction is like “flipping” that fraction.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_024ee291b7.png"></figure>Allow students a few minutes to find the reciprocals on their own. They can check their answers with a classmate. Based on the previous example, students should be able to “flip” the fractions to find the reciprocals of `\frac{2}{3}` and `\frac{8}{5}`.&nbsp;<ul><li>When you get to `\frac{1}{9}`, students will likely write `\frac{9}{1}`. Remind them that any number written as a fraction over `1` can be simplified to a whole number. So the reciprocal of `\frac{1}{9}` is `9`.&nbsp;</li><li>Then with `6`, you’ll want to encourage students to write that as a fraction over `1`, so `\frac{6}{1}`. From there, students can flip the fraction to find the reciprocal, `\frac{1}{9}`.&nbsp;</li></ul><h3>Formalize the division algorithm</h3>Tell students that we learned that we can divide fractions by multiplying - but we have to flip the second number first. You will notice that we do not say whether this is a `\text{GCF}` or an `\text{LCM}` problem. In fact, we don’t even say that Mr. Gomez needs the greatest number of packs possible.&nbsp;<h3>Reasoning through the problem</h3>Give students manipulatives like tiles and counters. You can even give them stickers and pens if you have any. Student work in pairs to figure out what are the different number of packs Mr. Gomez can make. Some students might want to make drawings.&nbsp;After giving them some time, ask students to come to the board and draw the packs they were able to make. Ask them to talk through the packs that they tried but could not make. Here are some possible drawings.&nbsp;You can make `2` or `3` packs:<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_bc76ffe171.png"></figure>If you make `4` packs, there are some pens left over:<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_2f9b57f790.png"></figure>Unlike, any one would try `5` packs. Students will begin to see that you can make packs when they are factors of the total number.&nbsp;You can ask them what is the greatest number of packs you can make - but that is completely optional. Ask them how many stickers and pens are in each pack. These questions are helpful for students to understand the entire context. &nbsp;<h3>Kinds of `\text{GCF}`-related problems</h3>The two common types of `\text{GCF}`-related problems are:<ul><li>Find the greatest number of groups when each group is similar. This is the Mr.Gomez problem that we just saw.&nbsp;<ul><li>Mr. Gomez has `12` stickers and `18` gel pens. He wants to make packs with an equal number of stickers and an equal number of gel pens in each pack. How many packs can he make if he does not want any stickers or pens left over?</li></ul></li><li>&nbsp;Find the greatest number of groups when each group has the same kind of object.&nbsp;<ul><li>There are `24` rose bushes and `18` geraniums. Each row should have only rose or only geranium. Each row has the same number of plants. How many rows can you make without any leftovers?&nbsp;</li></ul></li></ul><h3>Problems related to `\text{LCM}`</h3>Introduce a problem where student will eventually find the `\text{LCM}`. Start with small manageable numbers under `10`.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_7d03a11262.png"></figure>As students work in pairs, they will figure out ways to organize their work. They might make lists, tables, number lines.<h3>Reasoning through the problem</h3>Studnents might start listing the days on which Rachel will do personal training and separately the days she does spinning class and see when both happen on the same day. &nbsp;Personal Training:Day: `4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28…`Spinning class:Day: `5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…`or they might do two number lines. You could have close number lines ready for those who need them but don’t offer them at the beginning - if they begin to use number lines, you can offer these.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_776e595a39.png"></figure>Make sure to ask students to write an answer sentence (It will be `20` days before both classes happen again on the same day). This will help you give you inputs how much students have conceptually understood what they were just did.Some students might say that these are multiples and that the answer is the `\text{LCM}`.I would not do any more practice problems as a class. Give them a few more problems to work through in pairs. Do not mention whether these are `\text{GCF}`-related or `\text{LCM}`-related problems.&nbsp;

Helping students turn a problem about `\text{GCF}` or `\text{LCM}` into a concrete model will help them understand what they are looking for and what steps they need to take to find the solution. A visual model helps them make sense of the situation so that they are not just relying on memorized steps or guessing whether it is a `\text{GCF}` or an `\text{LCM}` problem.<h3>Warm up</h3>You will start the class without telling them that they are going to use `\text{GCF}` or `\text{LCM}` Give them a problem and ask them work in pairs to solve the problem.

Finding GCF and LCM Word Problems Lesson Plan

Students will be able to divide decimals fluently using the standard algorithm.

Give students a few minutes to think about possible answers. Have them write down `3` notices and `3` wonders about the equations. Students may notice there are two division problems and there are two multiplication problems. They may notice the `7.2` is being used in all four equations or notice the patterns with multiples of `10`.&nbsp; Students can have a variety of responses for what they wonder as well. Responses could vary from why the decimal is moved in a specific direction to what would happen if you divided by a decimal instead of a whole number.&nbsp;<h3>Dividing a decimal by a whole number</h3>Give students a simple problem `48 \div 3`. This is a good time to review the steps in long division.&nbsp;Ask them that if `48 \div 3` is `16`, what do they think would be the value of `4.8 \div 3`. This will lead to an interesting discussion of what should happen to the decimal point. But without getting into the procedure using long division, help students to build an intuition.&nbsp;Hopefully, students will see that `4.8` is just `48` divided by `10` and therefore `4.8 \div 3` will have the same answer as `48 \div 3` further divided by `10`.&nbsp;Then talk about what to do with the decimal point when they are doing long division.<figure class="table" style="float:left;"><table><tbody><tr><td style="border:1pt solid #000000;padding:5pt;vertical-align:top;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_af994337dc.png"></td><td style="border:1pt solid #000000;padding:5pt;vertical-align:top;">The first example is dividing a decimal by a whole number.&nbsp;Show students that they need to bring the decimal point up to the quotient so it will be correctly placed once they start dividing. Emphasize that the decimal point has to be placed exactly above where it is in the number inside the house (the dividend).Then they can ignore the decimal and complete the long division.</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>Try one more problem with students: `3.6\div 3`.<h3>Setting up for dividing by a decimal</h3>Ask students to look at the two expressions and figure out what is same and what is different in the two expressions.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_ddb0747e98.png"></figure>Students are likely to say that the numbers are same but are not since there are decimal points in both. Some might point out that in both cases, the decimal point has moved one place to the left. Ask them what operation can cause a decimal point to move to the left - students will make a connection to the problems in the warm-up.Once you have collected and discussed their answers, ask them if they both have the same value. Some students are likely to say that `4.8 \div 0.6` is smaller than `48 \div 6`, and some might think they have the same value. Ask students to explain their thinking. Hopefully, all be convinced that when you multiply `4.8` and `0.6` by `10`, you get `48` and `6`.. and that the `10`s cancel each other out (it is like multiplying by `1`).`\frac{4.8}{0.6} \cdot&nbsp;\frac{10}{10}=\frac{48}{6}`&nbsp;<h3>Dividing by a decimal</h3>Give students a new problem: `2.4 \div 0.8` and ask them if they expect the answer to be more than `1` or less than `1`. Once you have established that the answer will be more than `1` (because you are dividing by a smaller number .. and both are positive:), ask them to do the division. Students will likely use the work they did earlier to rewrite it as `24 \div 8` and give an answer of `3`.You can then move to a few more problems: `24 \div 0.12, 0.72 \div 1.2, and 5.4 \div 1.25`. Every time, you start the problem by asking them if they expect the answer to be more or less than `1`.<h3>Whiteboard Activity&nbsp;</h3>Pass out class whiteboards to students and have them work on each division problem. Once a student has completed the problem, have them hold up the whiteboard and check their work. Go over each problem as a quick discussion. You can have students volunteer to come to the board to show their work!

Students will be able to divide fractions from word problems and interpret what leftovers represent.

Ask students “Is there anybody whose partner followed a different strategy? Can you explain their strategy? After students have shared strategies, make a note of their various drawings and thinking.<h3>Strategies and tools for solving fraction division word problems.</h3>Typically, I teach fraction division and word problems after the ratio and rates units. Students are likely to use strategies from fraction division and using ratio tables to solve problems like these. Here are some sample drawings and thinking you are likely to see.<h3>Drawing circles</h3>This comes naturally to students since this is how they would they have learned about fractions since elementary school.<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_9f301e9574.png"></figure><h3>Number line&nbsp;</h3>Students would have have been exposed to this kind of thinking when going over dividing a whole number by a fraction.<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_93cc02060a.png"></figure><h3>Repeated addition</h3>Students might keep adding `1/4` till they reach `2` wholes. Or they might add `1/4` till they reach `1` whole and then conclude that you can make `4` baggies from `1` pound, so you can make `8` baggies from `2` pounds.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_4b23144499.png"></figure><h3>Ratio tables</h3>Students who are comfortable with ratio tables might express their thinking this way. Encourage to explain why they set it up this way, what the `4` and `1` mean, and what does multiplying by `2` mean. This helps them to make connections between their ratio table operations and the actual problem.<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_b59de8908d.png"></figure><h3>Number of groups and size of groups</h3>You can also encourage students to think about what do they know in the problem:<ul><li>Total</li><li>Number of groups</li><li>Size of each group</li></ul>This kind of thinking helps students to solve multiplication and division problems. You can give problems like to help them identify what they are given and what is missing.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_b2d8e41b94.png"></figure>Once you work through these problems, students might conclude that when the number of groups and size of groups is given, you would multiply. When the total is given and either number or size are given, you would divide. You do not want to enforce this as a rule… you really want to provide them with various tools to think through word problems.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>Fraction division word problems with mixed numbers</h3>In this problem you are given the total and the size of a group and the number of groups is missing. We have given a tape diagram as a model to represent this problem; you could also use a number line.Start with an open-ended question and see what relationships students can identify. Then ask more targeted questions around number, size, and total. Ask them what they are given and what is missing.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_eb0a3d22be.png"></figure>You would then identify the total and the size of the group. The total is `3\frac{1}{3}` and the size of each group is `2/3`.&nbsp;<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_abd5c705dc.png"></figure>Ask students if they can figure out the number of groups. Students are likely to show this kind of work.<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_22626b76c5.png"></figure><h3>Write the division equation</h3>The next step is to formalize this thinking. Tell students to set up an equation to represent this problem. Some might set up a multiplication equation and some might argue that this problem is represented by a division equation.Once students have `3\frac{1}{3} \div 2/3 = 5`, ask them if they can use the division algorithm to check whether the answer is correct. Hopefully students will show this work:`3\frac{1}{3} \div 2/3 = \frac{10}{3} \div 2/3 =&nbsp; 10/3 \times 3/2 = 30/6 = 5`Always encourage students to write an answer sentence so that they make a connection between their calculations and the problem.<h3>Fraction division word problems with dividing by a whole number</h3>In this problem, the total and the number of groups is given but the size of groups is missing. Typically you would represent such a problem using an area model.<figure class="image"><img src="https://bl-cms-bkt.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/image_31e1a28b48.png"></figure>Students might struggle to see that `7/8` is the total since it is less than `1`. Once they have convinced each other that the total and the number of groups is given, ask them these questions:<ul><li>What does the size of each group represent?</li><li>Do you expect the size of each group to be less than `1` or more than `1`? Less than `7/8` or more than `7/8`?</li></ul>This helps students to check for reasonableness of their final answer.Ask students to now divide the total into `4` groups. This is a representation of what students might draw. Ideally, you should use their drawings to work through the problem.
