Solve Proportional Relationship Problems (Word Problems) Worksheet

7 problems

A relationship where two quantities vary directly from each other is known as ‘Proportional Relationship’. For instance, the variable y varies directly from a variable x. So, y = kx where, k is the constant of proportionality. This signifies that, as x increases, y increases. Likewise, as y decreases, x decreases. Hence, the ratio between x and y always remains the same. The proportional relationship plays a significant role in real life too.

  • On the basis of the relationship that two or more quantities share, proportion is classified into two types. They are, direct proportion and inverse proportion.

  • The direct and exact relationship between two different quantities is known as direct proportion. Basically, if one quantity increases the other also increases. Similarly, if one quantity decreases, the other also decreases.

  • The unknown or indirect relationship between two quantities is known as inverse proportion. In simple words, if one quantity increases the other decreases and vice-versa.

                                  Proportional Relationship =  y = kx

                                   where, k is the constant of proportionality.

Let us look at the given example mentioned below to understand more about proportional relationships.

Q. It is given that y varies proportionally with x. The constant of proportionality is ⅓ and x is 12. Find the value of y.

Step 1: Note down all the given values.

So,

Constant of proportionality = ⅓

X = 12.

Step 2: Use the formula.

So,

Y = kx

Y = 12 * ⅓

Y = 4.
