Example: Write an expression to represent the number of cards in Joey’s collection if his number of cards is 8 less than half of the number of cards in Monica’s collection. Use z to represent the number of cards in Monica’s collection.


 

Solution: 

  • Half the number of cards in Monica’s collection can be represented by z/2.
  • Joey has 8 less than half of the number of cards in Monica’s collection. ‘Eight less’ means that we will have to subtract 8 from our previous expression.
  • Putting this collectively, we will get, y/2 - 8.
