The term signed numbers refers to the negative and positive numbers given. A number with no sign given is referred to as 'positive signed number'. On a number line, all the terms that are right of 0 are known as positive numbers. Similarly, all the numbers that are left of 0 are known as negative numbers. For example, -1, -4.1 are negative numbers. While 2.6 and 4 are positive numbers. It is very easy to multiply signed numbers with decimals.

Teaching multiplying Signed Numbers with Decimals Easily

 

  • Whenever, we multiply a signed number with decimal of the same sign, always multiply the number with the numerator and keep denominator same. If both are positive the answer will be positive only.


 

  • However, the multiplication of numbers with decimal can be represented by multiplying the number and numerator of decimal number converted into fraction divided by the base number.


 

Let us take an example mentioned below to understand more about multiplying signed fractions with deimals.


 

Example 1: Solve for 4 x  6.2.


 

According to the question, both the numbers are of the same sign. Hence, we can easily multiply them.

So,  4 x 6.2 = 4 x 62/10 = (4 x 62) / 10 = 248/10 = 24.8
