The term signed fractions refers to the negative and positive fractions given. A fraction having no sign is referred to as a 'positive signed number'. On a number line, all the terms that are right of 0 are known as positive numbers. Similarly, all the numbers that are left of 0 are known as negative numbers. For example, -1/2, and -2/4 are negative fractions. While 1/2 and 2/4 are positive numbers. It is very easy to multiply signed fractions.

Teaching multiplying Signed Fractions Easily

 

  • Whenever, we multiply two fractions of the same sign, always multiply the numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator and keep the same sign.


 

  • However, the multiplication of fractions can be represented either horizontally keeping the numerator on top and the denominator at the bottom separated by a division bar.


 

Let us take the example below to understand more about multiplying signed fractions.


 

Example 1: Solve for ¾ x  5/2.


 

According to the question, both numbers are of the same sign. Hence, we can easily multiply them.

So, ¾ x 5/2  = (3 x 5)/(4 x 2) = 15/8
