Solution:

In the given numbers -4,-6,-8 are negative numbers and 7, 1 are positive numbers.
Negative numbers farther left from zero are smaller in value. So, -8 < -6  < -4.
Positive numbers farther right from zero are larger in value. So, 1 < 7.
Therefore, the ascending order of the given signed numbers is -8, -6, -4, 1, 7.
