Dot Plots (Mean, Median, Mode, Range) Worksheet

A dot plot is a type of plot that is used to encode data within small circles or in a dot. It is used to represent any data or information in the form of tiny dots. A dot plot is very similar to a simplified bar graph or histogram. However, dot plots are used to represent or express small amounts of data, and it is not possible for a dot plot to express a large set of information.

Teaching Dot Plot- Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Worksheet Easily

  • Median - The middle most value of a data set is known as the median.

  • Mean - In simple terms, the average of the given data is known as the mean.

  • Mode - The number that has occurred the highest time in a data.

Here is an example of solving a problem on mean, median, and mode. Let’s look at the given example to understand more about the concept.

                      Mean = Sum of all observation / total number of observations

                       Median = [(n/2)th term + ((n/2) + 1)th term]/2 ( when even )

                                    = [(n + 1)/2]th term ( when odd ) .

Q. Find the mean, median and mode of the given data.

Data: 1, 3, 7, 5, 6, 8, 8, 9 and 10.

Step 1: Arrange the data either in ascending or descending order.

So,

1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, and 10.

Now, use the mean, median and mode formula respectively.

Mean =  Sum of all observation / total number of observations

1 + 3 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 / 9 = 57 / 9

57 / 9 = 6.33333.

Median =  [(n + 1)/2]th term

9 + 1 / 2 = 10 / 2

10 / 2 = 5th observation = 7.

Mode = 8 ( highest occurrence = 2 times ).
